About Tulips

Typically associated with The Netherlands because the vast majority of tulips now originate from there, it was the Ottoman Empire that first began the cultivation of tulips for commercial purposes. The introduction of the flower into Europe took place in the mid-16th century though the person responsible is under debate.

Originally seen as a luxury flower available to only the most wealthy, Tulips are thankfully now available to all and are in fact, the third most popular flower in the world behind the rose and the chrysanthemum. Perhaps, it is the tulip’s wide variation in shape, size and colour that make it such a well loved flower.

The word tulip is thought to have derived from the Persian word for turban.

The phrase “Tulip Mania” derives from a period in history where the price of tulip bulbs reached stratospheric proportions before subsequently collapsing. The peak of the bubble came in the mid-17th century where it is said that single bulbs were selling for up to 4000 florins – more than ten times the annual salary of a skilled craftsman.
